<p dir="ltr">***Cheatham-White Scholarship program established at NCCU and NC A&T***</p>
<p dir="ltr">CHAPEL HILL – Students will soon be able to apply for the Cheatham-White Scholarship, a newly established merit-based scholarship program for incoming freshmen attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University or North Carolina Central University beginning in the fall of 2018.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The program will provide an outstanding educational experience for students who are exceptional scholars, versatile and well-rounded individuals. Cheatham-White Scholars will represent students with a broad range of interests, proficient in areas of both the arts and sciences, demonstrate leadership potential and a strong commitment to service. The state budget recently approved by the General Assembly provides funding for up to 20 Cheatham-White scholarships at each university.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The scholarships are named in honor of Henry Cheatham and George White, African Americans who represented North Carolina in Congress around the turn of the 20th century. Cheatham, an educator who founded an orphanage for black children, won election in 1890 and 1892. White, an attorney who studied at Howard University, won the same 2nd District seat in 1896 and 1898.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The Cheatham-White Scholarship program recognizes future leaders with a strong commitment to public service by providing an opportunity to receive a top-notch education,” said UNC system president Margaret Spellings. “These scholarships also honor the legacy of great public servants like Henry Cheatham and George Henry White.</p>

<span style="color: #38761d; font-size: large;">Parents, I am sharing the article below with you because I believe that we should look at as many options as possible to set our <a href="http://bit.ly/SuccessForKids" target="_blank">kids </a>up for <a href="http://bit.ly/SuccessForKids" target="_blank">SUCCESS</a>! The article below discusses attending college abroad because it may be a less expensive option, plus an opportunity for tremendous <a href="http://bit.ly/HUPHDBREG" target="_blank">personal growth</a> for our <a href="http://bit.ly/HUKIM1" target="_blank">young adults</a>.</span><br />

</h2>
<h2 style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #262626; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 26px; font-weight: 300; line-height: 38px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
Chelsea Workman went to Ohio State University because it was her cheapest option. But she still had to take out student loans and work to make ends meet.</h2>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
By the middle of her sophomore year, she'd had enough. She dropped out and moved to Germany to finish her degree where college is free.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
Hunter Newsome, from California, decided to go to college in Estonia rather than the University of California, Davis -- at the very last minute. He's saving more than $10,000 a year on tuition, and he'll earn a bachelor's degree in three years rather than four.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
There are at least 44 schools across Europe where Americans can earn their bachelor's degree for free, according to Jennifer Viemont, the founder of an advising service called <a href="http://www.beyondthestates.com/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #1173b4; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Beyond The States.</a></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
All public colleges in Germany, Iceland, Norway and Finland are free for residents and international students. And some private schools in the European Union don't charge for tuition either. Many are going out of their way to attract foreigners by offering programs taught entirely in English.</div>
<figure class="body_img body_img--780" style="box-sizing: border-box; float: right; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; height: auto; margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; width: 780px;"><img alt="free college abroad" border="0" height="439" src="http://i2.cdn.turner.com/money/dam/assets/160219123027-free-college-abroad-780x439.jpg" style="box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; width: 780px;" width="780" /><figcaption class="caption" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; margin: 15px 0px 0px; padding: 0px;">Hannah Remo, Hunter Newsome and Chelsea Workman all moved to Europe to get their college degrees.</figcaption></figure><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
When they do charge for tuition, the bill is paltry compared to the U.S. <a href="http://trends.collegeboard.org/sites/default/files/2015-trends-college-pricing-final-508.pdf" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #1173b4; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">The average cost of tuition here (without room and board)</a> is currently $9,410 at public colleges and $32,405 at private colleges, while a majority of programs in Europe charge less than $2,225 a year, according to Viemont. Some of the highest tuition for international students is in the Netherlands, but it still tends to be less than $9,000.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
Of course, a lot of American students <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2015/11/04/pf/college/college-tuition/index.html?iid=EL" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #1173b4; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;">don't pay full price for tuition.</a> For those getting a big scholarship at home, moving to Europe might not be that great a deal. Those at public schools end up paying less than an average of $4,000 when you account for scholarships and grants. Still, that doesn't beat free.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
"The cost is what makes people think about going to college abroad, but then they start to see the other benefits like learning a new language, travel opportunities, and being prepared to work in a global economy," Viemont said.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
It's not for everyone, though. You won't find frat parties, sorority houses, or football games overseas.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
And it might not be the right fit for someone with their heart set on immediately returning home after graduating. There aren't very good stats on how many Americans are getting degrees abroad (<a href="http://www.iie.org/Research-and-Publications/Publications-and-Reports/IIE-Bookstore/New-Frontiers" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #1173b4; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">there were 47,000 in 2012</a> compared to 20 million in the U.S.), let alone how employable they are back home.<strong style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"> </strong>The unique experience might be to your advantage, but it could be hard to find fellow alumni to help with a job hunt in the States.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
Overseas, you'll probably have to find your own housing. On average, room and board costs about $10,000 at American colleges, but the students CNNMoney spoke to for this story pay much less in rent in Europe.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
They don't have dining halls to go to for meals, though. And they also have to apply for a residency permit or visa, and -- depending on the country -- may have to pay for health insurance.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">
But these things don't bother these three Americans who are currently getting their college degrees abroad.</div>
<figure class="body_img body_img--780" style="box-sizing: border-box; float: right; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; height: auto; margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; width: 780px;"><img alt="chelsea workman germany" border="0" height="439" src="http://i2.cdn.turner.com/money/dam/assets/160219123114-chelsea-workman-germany-780x439.jpg" style="box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; width: 780px;" width="780" /></figure><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: CNN, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 30px; padding: 0px 0px 30px;">

What is going on in society?*Thoughts by B. Brown --- <a href="http://www.breg1994.com/" target="_blank">BREG</a><br />
<br />
<br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">This is another tragic situation.</span><div style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">I stopped a black male youth (maybe 12 - 14 years old) in the West-End area of Atlanta, GA doing almost the exact same thing that this Cleveland, OH youth was doing a little over a month ago. I did not know him, but I stopped my car, got his attention & said, "young brother, please put away that toy gun & do not play with it outside your home. As a matter of fact, I would like for you to throw it away. I don't want you to be killed out here by someone mistaking your toy gun as a real gun."</span><div style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">He didn't say anything, but he apparently understood what I said because he did put it up (in his waistband however) & ran on down the street with his friend.</span><div style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">I saw the orange tip in this youth's toy gun, but it has been said that the Cleveland youth did not have the orange tip in/on it.</span><div style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">Our youth have a responsibility to follow directions from authority figures (parents, teachers, police, firefighters, etc.) When we as parents, guardians, adults do not teach our children how to conduct themselves properly & to respect authority, some of the decisions/mistakes they make could be fatal ... </span><span style="font-family: Tahoma;"><a href="http://bit.ly/PTH-HY1" target="_blank">Parenting the Hip-Hop Youth</a></span><span style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;"> ... We've seen this situation and scenario over & over again. When the officers say, "Show me your hands or put your hands up," we all are supposed to show are hands with no weapon in them as soon as possible. If there are mental/learning challenges involved, not too many police officers are going to be able to assess that in the heat of the moment.</span></div>
<div>
<div style="orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
<span style="font-family: Tahoma;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
<span style="font-family: Tahoma;">We all must do our very best not to put ourselves in position to be killed.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">Education & the ability to think is lacking for too many of our youth that actually believe being in a gang & being "hard in the streets" is what they are supposed to do and who they are supposed to be. This Cleveland youth should not have had the bb/pellet gun in the 1st place, the orange tip should not have been removed, he should not have been waving it at people & he should have put his hands up immediately instead of reaching into his waistband. That's a universal no-no.</span><div style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">Should the police officers have done a better job of assessing the situation? Probably so. Do I believe in using body cameras? Yes, I agree that we need body cameras on every single police officer in the world & continuous training on these types of situations and more!</span><div style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">When humans are involved. Anything can happen. Police Officers are human as well, & they want to go home at the end of the day just like me and you.</span><div style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Tahoma; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; widows: 2;">I am Praying for everyone involved. One Love!</span></div>

Are you Black Enough?*Thoughts by <b>Barry Brown</b><br />
<br />
<br />
In 2014, it is amazing that we have gotten to a point as African-American/Black people where we have a large segment of our population that actually believes that being smart, setting goals, working hard to achieve those goals and being successful is not what black people do.<br />
<br />
This type of mind-set breeds self-hate which makes one person truly not like another person because that successful person chose to improve themselves and work towards a better life!<br />
<br />
When someone chooses to not value learning, education, hard work, personal development and being smart; that decision usually leads to terrible results like homelessness, not eating everyday, wearing worn out clothes, etc.<br />
<br />
Our young people must learn & truly understand that a basic education and graduation from high school is essential to their long-term earning potential success. They must also understand that learning a skill and trade that someone is willing to pay you for over and over again is very important!<br />
<br />
My father and mother are being honored this upcoming weekend for their roles in the Civil Rights Student Movement of the 1960's when they attended Clark College (now Clark-Atlanta University). My brother and I would not be who we are today if it wasn't for our parents instilling certain values within us and having certain expectations of us. I am very grateful to my parents for loving me enough to teach me, discipline me and love me some more!!!<br />
<br />
Parents, let's teach our children how to love themselves and want to be something positive in life, so that they will want to see other people be positive and successful in life!!!<br />
<br />
LET'S BREAK THE CYCLE!!! READ WHAT CHARLES BARKLEY HAS TO SAY BELOW. ONE LOVE!!!<br />
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">(CNN)</strong> -- Charles Barkley hasn't met a sensitive topic he couldn't dig into, and now he's speaking on what he calls a "dirty, dark secret" in the African-American community.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph2" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
During an interview <a href="http://sports.cbslocal.com/audio/afternoons-with-anthony-gargano-and-rob-ellis/eagles-lb-demeco-ryans/" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">with a Philadelphia radio station</a>, Barkley expounded on claims that <a href="http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2238790-mike-freemans-10-point-stance-another-wr-learns-not-to-disrespect-the-qb" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Seattle Seahawks quarterback</a><a href="http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2238790-mike-freemans-10-point-stance-another-wr-learns-not-to-disrespect-the-qb" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank"> Russell Wilson</a> wasn't liked by some of his teammates in part because he wasn't considered to be "black enough."</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph3" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Barkley said he wasn't at all surprised.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph4" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"There are a lot of black people who are unintelligent, who don't have success," <a href="http://www.mediaite.com/online/charles-barkley-goes-off-on-unintelligent-black-people/" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Barkley said</a>. "It's best to knock a successful black person down 'cause they're intelligent, they speak well, they do well in school, and they're successful. It's crabs in a barrel. ... We're the only ethnic group that says, 'hey, if you go to jail, it gives you street cred.' "</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph5" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The concept of "crabs in a barrel" isn't new, and it's universal. If you've ever seen a bucket of crabs at the market, the ones at the bottom will try to pull down the crabs that are closer to the top.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph6" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"I lived this, and if it weren't for my parents I wouldn't have pushed through it," <a href="https://twitter.com/BRTS_DN/status/526715081586114560" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">one Twitter user</a> said in response to Barkley's comments.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph7" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<a href="https://twitter.com/DrStevePerry" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Education advocate and CNN contributor Dr. Steve Perry</a> is another observer who agrees with Barkley.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph8" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Unfortunately, as I tell my white friends, we as black people, we're never going to be successful not because of you white people but because of other black people," Barkley said. "When you're black, you have to deal with so much crap in your life from other black people. It's a dirty, dark secret; I'm glad it's coming out."Others have been irked by Barkley's delivery. When Perry tweeted that he applauded Barkley's remarks, some responded that they bristled at Barkley's tendency to generalize the experience of an entire group.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph10" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The controversy began with an item from <a href="http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2238790-mike-freemans-10-point-stance-another-wr-learns-not-to-disrespect-the-qb" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman</a>, who said some of Wilson's Seahawks teammates don't care for him because "they think he's too close to the front office," he "doesn't always take the blame with teammates for mistakes he makes," and "some of the black players think Wilson isn't black enough."</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph11" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"There is ... an element of race that needs to be discussed," Freeman said of Wilson's relationship with his teammates. "My feeling on this -- and it's backed up by several interviews with Seahawks players -- is that some of the black players think Wilson isn't black enough. This is an issue that extends outside of football, into African-American society, though it's gotten better recently. Well-spoken blacks are seen by some other blacks as not completely black. Some of this is at play." (Bleacher Report shares a parent company with CNN.)</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph12" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<a href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2014/10/26/7074047/richard-sherman-on-russell-wilson-not-black-enough-rumors-its-made-up" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">The report has been denied</a> by Seahawks player Richard Sherman, who said the accusations were "made up," and Wilson too has shaken off Freeman's point of view.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph13" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Black enough? I don't even know what that means," <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2014/10/26/7074047/richard-sherman-on-russell-wilson-not-black-enough-rumors-its-made-up" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Wilson said</a>. "I'm just an educated, well-spoken male."</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph14" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
But to Barkley, Freeman's assertions are a very real part of being successful and black.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph15" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"For some reason we're brainwashed to think if you're not a thug or an idiot, you're not black enough. If you go to school, make good grades, speak intelligent and don't break the law, you're not a good black person," he said. "It's a dirty dark secret. I hate to bring white people into our crap, but as a black person, we all go through it when you're successful."</div>

<br />
As we continue to advance in society and seemingly create wealth out of the thin air, there is something very valuable that is falling through the cracks. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005F79PLS" target="_blank">OUR CHILDREN!!!</a><br />
<br />
We are seeing more and more instances of young people plotting and actually following through with murderous schemes at our schools across the country. We have to start implementing better strategies to find out information prior to these tragedies instead of just reacting. It's called being proactive!<br />
<br />
We cannot continue to chase money as adults and parents, and ignore our children that need our love, attention, structure, discipline & guidance. We are obviously ignoring signs that may be right in our face because we are not eating dinner with our children, we are not going to the park and playing with our children, and we may not even talk with our children when we are driving them to school or another activity. At the end of the day, we do not know what are children are doing in their daily lives. We see them everyday and believe everything is ok. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004SHNZ2G" target="_blank">PARENTING YOUTH TODAY!!!</a><br />
<br />
Parents, if we allow tv, movies, music and everyone/everything else to raise our children, what could we possibly think our children are going to grow up to be?<br />
<br />
Let's be proactive in our parenting which leads to being proactive in our schools, and let's be the change we want to see! Checkout the article below ........................................................<br />

<strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">(CNN)</strong> -- Just as parents are grappling with how to keep their kids safe on social media, schools are increasingly confronting a controversial question: Should they do more to monitor students' online interactions off-campus to protect them from dangers such as bullying, drug use, violence and suicide?</div>

(Those<a href="http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/20/us/rebecca-sedwick-bullying-death/" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"> charges were eventually dropped.</a>)</div>

Wayne Blanton, executive director of the Florida School Boards Association, said the school was aware of on-campus bullying of Sedwick and dealt with it by separating the students and putting them in different classes, but it was not aware of the off-campus bullying -- online -- that was taking place.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph14" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph15" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"The key to everything is, we have to be notified ... because there is no way we could monitor all the Facebook accounts and e-mail accounts and tweets and Twitters and all that," Blanton said. "We have 2.8 million students, but if it's reported, our teachers, our principals, our school resource officers are receiving extensive training and acting immediately on that."</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph16" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Blanton said school administrators are talking, especially after the Sedwick case, about what more they can do in terms of monitoring kids' social media but said that besides the logistics of keeping tabs on millions of students, there are big legal questions about a student's privacy rights.</div>

"I think that's the biggest issue you're wrestling with when you start intercepting someone's messages," Blanton said. "Should I intercept your messages based on certain words? You're really getting into a gray area that could potentially lead to a lot of litigation."</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph19" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Daniel Domenech, executive director of the American Association of School Administrators, the school superintendents association, said it's "not always clear" legally what can be done and what is within the scope of the district's authority.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph20" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"In one state, the court will support the district and say, 'absolutely, you have the right to do that.' In a very similar situation in another court, the court will rule 'absolutely not, it's freedom of speech,' " Domenech said. "So the whole legal issue right now is very much up in the air."</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph21" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Cases in point: In September in Nevada, <a href="http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/Sep/02/nv-students-suspension-upheld-for-myspace-threats/" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">a federal appeals court backed school officials</a> in the suspension of a high school student who allegedly threatened his classmates with violence on Myspace. But in Indiana in 2011, <a href="http://content.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2089729,00.html" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">a court found that school officials had violated</a> students' free speech rights when two girls were suspended from extracurricular activities for posting pictures of themselves with phallic-shaped lollipops.<strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"></strong></div>

"I think the best guideline we can give school districts is to always go back to the issue of the safety of the students uppermost," Domenech said. "If the safety of a student's involved and you are not necessarily sure whether the district has the authority to do it or not, well, you know what, go out on a limb at that point, because if you are talking about saving a student's life then you'd rather be safe than sorry."</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph23" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">

John Palfrey Jr., head of the boarding school Phillips Academy in Massachusetts, said he and his colleagues try to strike a balance between ensuring students' safety and not having them feel "like we are recording their every move."</div>

If a student follows him on Twitter, he will follow them back, but on Facebook, teachers don't accept friend requests from students or extend them, and they don't "go hunting around" to see what students are saying on the social networking platform.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph27" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"We see certain spaces that they're communicating with their friends as akin to what they might be saying ... behind closed doors in a dorm room and I think that's a place where we, as administrators, don't belong," said Palfrey.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph28" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">

How much to monitor students' social media is not just an issue fraught with logistical and legal challenges. There is also the court of public opinion, which leans heavily to the "schools are overreaching" side of the equation, according to comments we received on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/cnn/posts/10152074758626509" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">CNN's Facebook page.</a></div>

"Schools need to respect boundaries and the First Amendment," Tom Gayda, who is director of student publications for an Indianapolis high school, wrote in an e-mail.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph31" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Kids needs to be free to say (something) without feeling like the school is watching them 24/7," Gayda later said in an interview. "My concern is if a kid goes home and writes 'the school lunch sucks,' and the next day they're brought in and in trouble for complaining about school food."</div>

<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph33" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
But Lauren, a 20-year-old college student who only wanted to use her first name, believes that schools should be monitoring social media content posted by students because many times, she said, parents aren't aware of what their children are up to.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph34" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"I recently found my 13-year-old sister's Tumblr with the title 'Depressed but well dressed,' " Lauren said. "It immediately made me take action, let my parents know and make sure she got the help she needed.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph35" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Had the situation been any different, the outcome might have been tragic," she said. "I support this measure and believe more schools should follow."</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph36" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Social media monitoring: Wave of the future</strong><strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">?</strong></div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph37" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Domenech, who represents public school superintendents, said that at this stage, he thinks only a "very small number" of districts are actively monitoring students online, primarily because they don't have the staffing or the money to hire a firm to help.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph38" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Instead of more schools trying to follow the Glendale district's lead, Blanton of the Florida School Boards Association believes schools should mount a major public relations campaign targeting students and parents, letting them know it's OK to report anything of concern they see online.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph39" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<a href="http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/04/living/schools-bullying-definition-overuse/index.html" style="border: 0px; color: #004276; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Are we too quick to cry 'bully'?</a></div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph40" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
He compares it to an ad campaign in Florida from about 15 years ago encouraging students to report any weapons they see on campus. Now, 90% of guns found on school premises<strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"> </strong>in the state<strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"></strong>are reported by students, he said.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph41" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"We have to get to the same point with when you see a student (or) another student sees a student being bullied, or a parent knows about a Facebook account, they have to let us know," Blanton said.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph42" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In the end, prevention is better than high-tech surveillance, said Domenech.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph43" style="border: 0px; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px; padding: 0px 24px 19px 186px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"I think most school districts don't want to become NSAs," he said. "We don't see that that is really our role."</div>

As I travel around the country keynoting, conducting breakout sessions and sharing "Make A Way" Education Program <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HR6U6IQ" target="_blank">materials</a> with education conference attendees, I usually hear the same stories no matter where the school is located in the United States.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In a recent visit to a high school, I was informed that two upper-class football players are facing tribunal for having sexual relations with a female sophomore on the school elevator.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was also informed that a substitute teacher got into a physical altercation with a student that physically challenged them.</div>
<div>

<div>
You see, these are just a couple of examples of what is going on in our schools across the country.</div>

One of the ways to find out what your children are doing at school is to physically visit the school on a frequent basis. All of the top performing schools have one thing in common for sure, parent volunteers and participation.</div>

With the tremendous advancement in technology, parents of a particular class (i.e. Class of 2014) may choose to start a Facebook Group to highlight successes and to discuss issues and brainstorm on solutions.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Expectations of our young people is very important! As <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AMHDMD8" target="_blank">parents and adults</a>, we literally cannot afford to continue to coddle them because they will actually grow up and not be able to handle any type of adverse situation. We have socially promoted too many young men and women that end up being these very disruptive 17-18 year old 9th graders. We have to teach them to be accountable for their actions and push, pull and encourage them to move forward in their lives in a positive and productive manner!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now parents, I understand that many of you are out here working your behinds off to take care of your family, but we have to take the time to invest in our children. It is a sacrifice, but it is more than worth it. If we do not show our children that education is important, then they will not take education seriously:</div>
<div>
<br />- Do you know if your child can read well or at all?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child can't verbally express themselves very well?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child is late to school everyday?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child is late to every class, every day?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child refuses to be a student at school?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child wears a headset and listens to music in class all day?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child is texting and using social media all day at school?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child talks on the phone during school all day?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child uses profanity in front of and at adults everyday?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child is in the stairwell or at their locker kissing?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child is walking around the school all day or leaving campus frequently?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child is in a gang?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child is selling drugs and stolen merchandise?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child is using drugs?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child has a gun?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your daughter is pregnant?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your son is about to become a teenage father?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child has a STD and/or HIV?</div>
<div>
- Do you know your child is FAILING almost every class?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is what is going on at too many schools across this country everyday! It's embarrassing and terribly sad!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I can go on and on, but I digress because we can save a lot of our children as long as we are willing to love, teach and discipline them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Instead of buying our children designer shoes, clothes, and phones, let's invest that money into tutors and/or a professional learning center to at least get our children up to grade level, and preferably well above grade level!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We actually have an epidemic, and there's not enough people talking about the situation in our public schools across the country. If we continue socially passing our children, not holding them accountable and not disciplining them. What should we expect from them as a adults? It's actually very scary. I am really understanding that this rising generation may truly be the 1st generation that does not do better than the one before it. That's a dim view of the future for a lot people. What skills do they possess now? What kind of professional skills are they capable of learning and developing? Where are these young people going to work? What kind of businesses are they going to start?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If your child is one of the young people that is achieving and coming to school to be an actual student, then it is imperative that we create and maintain high level learning environments for the young people that want to learn and grow! We have to nourish our best minds and students putting forth effort just as much or more than the energy we put into the young people that literally run around the school all day and cause our better students to suffer.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I understand that a lot of parents are in denial, but once we face reality and decide to put the work in with our children to make sure we give them the best educational support and encouragement that we can; we will see the light shine in our children! It's us as parents and adults that make the difference, and we can do it!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Schools are being consolidated (*closed) and more prisons are being built. Parents, guess who they are building these jails for, our children ---<br /><br /><ul style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 23.200000762939453px;">
<li>Data reported (Ed Week) for the 2010-11 academic year marks the first time all of the states used a uniform measure to calculate graduation rates, in accordance with a compact signed by the nation's governors in an effort to improve accuracy and accountability.<br />
Significant jumps in the percentages of black and Latino students graduating were an important factor in the improved nationwide graduation rate, according to Ed Week. The full report, and the spotlight stories focusing on efforts to get dropouts back in school, is well worth reading. I was particularly interested in the data on young adults ages 16-21. Here's what that group - 27 million -- looks like nationally:<br /><br />
<ul>
<li>More than 20 million are in school, either K-12 or higher ed;</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>5.1 million graduated but are not enrolled in a post-secondary institution;</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>1.8 million young adults (which, not surprisingly, includes a disproportionate percentage of minorities) have left school without a diploma. Of those 1.2 million of them -- 66 percent -- are not working.<br /><br />- <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/06/high-school-graduation-rate-hits-40-year-peak-in-the-us/276604/" target="_blank">EMILY RICHMOND</a></li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
Parents, get involved, stay in tune with your children and set expectations for your children. We all have to do it. Superintendents, Administrators, Teachers and Staff, we all have to want our students to learn and not just prepare for standardized tests. Let's truly educate our children so that they grow into skilled and productive adults. Our children have the capacity to learn, and will learn if we LOVE, TEACH & DISCIPLINE them. </div>

<br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Is Your Child Next? Target Practice ...</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Let me start with saying that this Dunn character & Zimmerman are dead wrong for murdering Jordan Davis and Trayvon Martin. Dunn & Zimmerman should 30 feet under the jail. That's my opinion, the horrific thing is that there are a lot of people that agree with Dunn and Zimmerman's action and believe they did act in self-defense. Ok, that's their opinion.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I want to address the idea that both of these young men could possibly still be alive if they were able to control their emotions and respect themselves enough to <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HR6U6IQ" target="_blank">keep it moving</a> instead of confronting, talking back and basically "bucking" at adults that were ready and willing to take their lives.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">You see, I share with my daughters and any young people I get to speak with, that if they cannot control themselves, you give someone else the right to control you. There lies one of the biggest issues that our young people face on a daily basis, controlling their emotions.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Let me form an image in your mind as a parent & adult. You are not <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AMHDMD8" target="_blank">emphasizing education</a> in your home. You do not discipline your child consistently and you actively attempt to be friends with your child instead of a parent. You reward your child with $100.00+ tennis shoes, but they are failing several classes if not all of them. Has a picture formed in your mind?</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">These are the same young people that believe it's ok to use profanity in front of adults or anybody for that matter. They believe it's ok to wait until the late bell rings and then go to class. And if anyone, including an adult, says something to them, that's a huge problem for the young person; because in their mind no one should restrict their actions or speech in any form or fashion. The problem with this way of thinking is that these young people are usually setting themselves up for jail or death.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">With society moving closer and closer to an "everything goes" wild wild west throwback mentality, our young men and ladies of color are being set-up to be target practice. If we do not counter-act the societal woes that are being established along with the laws that are already on the books with better quality parenting with an emphasis of helping our children find their purposes in life as soon as possible; we are going to continue to get the short-end of the stick with our children being buried at early ages and hauled off to jail where they become 2014 slaves. The 13th Amendment did not totally abolish slavery. Read it for yourself. You may be surprised!</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I will finish this blog with a story from one of my recent visits and work in a high school. The class was reading the updated version of Romeo & Juliet. It's called ... wait for it ... Romiette & Julio ... lol ... So first of all, I had to almost beg students to read out loud. They wanted to listen to the audio book. The interesting and sad part about getting the students to read out loud is that the smart students do not want to let the other students know that they are smart. It's amazing, I believe the opposite. I believe that the students that need to improve should be working diligently on improving attempting to learn from the smart students, but now a culture has started where the not so bright students pick on the students that are smart and putting forth effort. Call me crazy ... So during one of our discussions, the term "lame" came up, and the students told me that a lame person is someone that isn't popular. I asked them do they know what lame actually means? I had a student look the word up on their phone of course ... Lol ... and when they found out what it means not being able to move or use a part of your body; they just had blank stares on their faces. I shared with them the fact that they were wrong for picking on students that are putting forth an effort to learn and to improve because the actual lames in this scenario is them, because they are not using the most important part of their bodies, their brains!</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">It was a good learning experience for me and the students.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Parents, let's step our game up and choose to <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004SHNZ2G" target="_blank">invest in our children</a> so that we may stop this school to death and school to jail pipeline.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">One Love!</span>(BREG)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06757161714519522705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7541964175378894900.post-40170338883344792592013-12-09T08:14:00.001-05:002013-12-09T08:14:46.318-05:00THANK YOU NELSON MANDELA!!!Thoughts by: B. Brown<br />
<br />
<br />
I had to wait a few days before I commented on the passing of one of the world's most endearing political figures --- <a href="http://www.nelsonmandela.org/" target="_blank">NELSON MANDELA</a>!!!<br />
<br />
I had just arrived back in Atlanta, GA, and as I was walking to baggage claim, I saw on one of the tv monitors that the great South African leader had passed. I immediately said wow, and thought what a loss to the world! Then I felt great about the life he led and the legacy that he has left! I thought about the movie <u><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invictus_(film)" target="_blank">Invictus</a></u>. My feelings went from sadness to a feeling of happiness for a man that lived to be 95 years old and contributed so much to this world which has helped me live the way that I live now!<br />
<br />
To stand up against apartheid and to be imprisoned for 27 years because of racism, and then to be released and become the 1st Black President of South Africa is an amazing journey!!!<br />
<br />
I had just told my oldest daughter who Nelson Mandela was during the Soul Train Music Awards as <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/07/idris-elba-nelson-mandela_n_4400768.html" target="_blank">Idris Elba</a> spoke about portraying him in the upcoming film about his life.<br />
<br />
He is admired by so many great leaders from around the world, and he set the stage for so many great injustices around the world to be corrected and set right!!!<br />
<br />
I would like to impress upon all <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AMHDMD8" target="_blank">parents and educators</a> alike to make sure that all our children know who Nelson Mandela is and what he stood for while he lived!!!<br />
<br />
As our world and domestic leaders grow older, the torch is being passed down; and we must continue to develop our young people and arm them with the knowledge and support that they need to become the great young men and women that we need them to be in order to move forward spiritually, economically and politically!!!<br />
<br />
Thank you Mr. Nelson Mandela for being one of the brightest lights to have illuminated this planet!!!<br />
<br />
We love you!!!<br />

Judicial System Dropped the ball!Thoughts By: B. Brown (<a href="http://www.breg1994.com/" target="_blank">BREG</a>)<br />
<br />
<br />
I literally had to let a couple of days go by before I responded in writing (via Social Media) to the verdict in the State of Florida vs. Zimmerman trial. I was saddened and disappointed, but I was not surprised when the "NOT GUILTY" verdict was announced. The bottom line to me is that the Prosecution (The State of Florida) did an absolutely terrible job in attempting to convict Zimmerman on Second Degree Murder and/or Manslaughter. As I watched a couple of video excerpts from the trial, I kept saying to myself, they (the Prosecution Team) are not even convincing me that Zimmerman didn't act in self-defense, and that's when I had to start preparing myself for a "Not Guilty" verdict.<br />
<br />
No, I'm not an attorney and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night (Comic Relief). But I do have several close friends that are attorney's, and I am a <a href="http://www.brownb71.legalshield.com/" target="_blank">LegalShield</a> Representative. From my perspective, I believe that the prosecution left so many angles open for debate and did not focus on the main facts during the trial which to me are Zimmerman's lengthy history of calling 911 for suspicious people and activity in his community, making the comment "They are not going to get away with it this time ...," blatantly disregarding the 911 operator's request to stop following Trayvon, actually getting out of his vehicle to confront Trayvon, argue, fight and kill an unarmed 17 year old. That evidence seems to be enough to convict a person of at least manslaughter, but with a very suspect Prosecution Team, coupled with a six-person (five white & one of color) jury that obviously thought it was ok for Zimmerman to kill Trayvon; a terrible precedence has been established in the State of Florida.<br />
<br />
Prayerfully, there are other states that have different laws that would not allow a person to get off freely after killing another person in the manner that Zimmerman did. Under no circumstances can we allow people to believe it is open-season on our young men of color here in the United States.<br />
<br />
Yes, we have to raise and teach our young men of color how to act and conduct themselves in different situations. You see, we must understand that young men of color are the most commonly profiled people on this planet, specifically here in the United States. So learning to think clearly, with positive long-term & short-term goals will allow our young men of color to "<a href="http://00ecd343n3fvbv77xd88ifkdqj.hop.clickbank.net/?tid=HUSTLEUNIVERSITY" target="_blank">KEEP IT MOVING</a>" no matter what challenges & obstacles they face. We are all products of our environments, but we have to continue to strive for greatness no matter what; and it starts with us as <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004SHNZ2G" target="_blank">Parents</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AMHDMD8" target="_blank">Adults</a> doing our very best to instill certain qualities into our children.<br />
<br />
We have to vote for the right people to get into office and vote on the right laws & amendments that are put on the table for citizens to vote on. When we do the research and pay attention to what is going on around us, we have a much better chance of making informative decisions that will help our communities rather than destroy them.<br />
<br />
I have Prayed for Zimmerman and released it to God, because Zimmerman has a tough road ahead of him for sure, and I am definitely Praying for the entire Martin Family because they are experiencing tremendous pain right now.<br />
<br />
One Love!!!<br />

<br />
I personally had to wait and let some time past before I could write about what happened in Newtown, Connecticut. It is another tragedy that has rocked our nation, and it is truly sad.<br />
<br />
From my experience in education and formerly working at a school on a daily basis, this truly unfortunate incident has made me look back on some of the situations I was in during a school day, and I thank God for keeping me safe along with the other staff members and students at the school. We experienced 10 students fighting at one time, drive by shootings, unauthorized visitors, confiscating drugs and weapons from students and the list goes on in reference to the dangerous situations that arose on almost a daily basis.<br />
<br />
When you look at a school, you automatically want to believe it is a safe place to be, and in most cases, a school is a relatively safe environment. However, a few things have changed over the years that have changed the dynamics of school and what actually takes place at school in this day and age. One of the most powerful things that has been taken out of schools is Prayer. Is there anything Spiritual covering over our public schools today? The other interesting piece that is missing in the majority of our public schools is adapting to the times. We are in 2013!!! The majority of the schools that I have visited over the years are still teaching the way they taught in the 50's & the 60's, and of course we don't have those type of students anymore. As of matter of fact, a lot of parents introduce their children to adults by using the adults first name (that's not good). You see, we don't necessarily have "Leave It To Beaver," yes sir and yes ma'am children anymore. Society has changed tremendously and our education system has to change with it!!! The safety of the staff and students has to be first and foremost because how can teaching and learning take place if no one feels safe in the so-called learning environment? There are a lot of parents that are not sending their children to school to learn, the children are basically coming to school to be babysitted and then the parents assume the school is going to teach the child everything that the child is supposed to know ... manners, life skills, etc. It's an amazing idea, let me as a parent not prepare my child for school in no form or fashion, and then send my child to school and expect the school personnel to teach my child how to do everything. Wow!!!<br />
<br />
I remember and actually still have the proposals that my co-worker and I submitted to several Superintendents of the school system that we were working in at the time. We actually met with those Superintendents to present and discuss our proposals of increased security and school-education based community outreach, and each time, nothing materialized. What we have seen is the continuous decay of a lot of our public schools across the country because no one (including myself) has truly attempted to breakdown the status quo. It is time to take a stand. A new model for operating schools must be created to work hand-in-hand with what is going on in our overall society for us to see a significant difference. --- <a href="http://www.reachthemtoteachthem.com/">http://www.reachthemtoteachthem.com</a><br />
<br />
Let's spend the money on more security at our schools. One Police (Resource) Officer is usually not enough to stop any attack. With the overwhelming influence of violent video games, movies, music, reality tv, social media, the internet in general, etc.; the parents and children of today are faced with far greater challenges then parents and young people of just 10 - 20 years ago.<br />
<br />
We definitely have to look at mental illness and how we address it across the board because we have a lot of adults and youth alike that are suffering in silence, and when they hit the point of no return, it can be a terrible situation not only for themselves, but for others too.<br />
<br />
I am staying optimistic because I have tremendous FAITH in GOD, and I believe that we are going to close the gap on mental illnesses and troubled souls so that incidents like what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT will not happen on a daily, weekly, monthly or even yearly basis. These type incidents need to be significantly rare in occurrence.<br />
<br />
My Prayers and Love are with the families of the victims and the entire town of Newtown, CT. May God Bless you and keep you!!!<br />
<br />
Happy Holidays to All!!! Brown<br />
<br />
<br />
I had the awesome pleasure of attending the 40th Annual Conference of the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) - November 14 -18, 2012 in Nashville, TN!!!<br />
<br />
It is always great to network & connect with educators that are working toward a solution for our students in today's learning environment.<br />
<br />
NABSE's theme for the conference this year was "Teaching & Learning: What is Working in America's Classrooms that Impacts the Success of Children of African Descent?"<br />
<br />
My Hustle University - <a href="http://www.hustleuniversity.org/">http://www.hustleuniversity.org</a> family and I take pride in presenting fresh, relatable content and learning tools for schools (Elementary, Middle & High Schools). From our <u>Scholars Make Dollars Program</u> all the way to <u>10 Things Every Leader Must Know</u>, we believe that an educator must "reach them to teach them!" Our non-traditional & real-life approach to staff trainings, and motivational presentations to both the staff & students is what makes us stand out!<br />
<br />
Below are some of our products:<br />
<br />
<u><strong>Scholars Make Dollars</strong></u> is an interactive literacy based coloring book series that teaches valuable life-lessons, the importance of education, strong values and leadership characteristics that help them not only become successful entrepreneurs, but also great community youth leaders.<br />
<br />
<u><strong>Keep It Movin'</strong></u> is a users guide for the daily defense against life's most common pitfalls and problems. The masterful techniques in Keep It Movin' aid in anger management, stress/anxiety reduction, conflict resolution, depression and problem solving, ultimately turning the reader into an Immovable Object and an Unstoppable Force!<br />
<br />
<u><strong>Bored of Education</strong></u> addresses the question by a young person, "Why should I go to school?" <u>Bored of Education</u> is the answer that parents, educators and youth service providers have been looking for to give a response to the young people. It's written in such a straight-talk manner, it simply makes sense!<br />
<br />
<u><strong>10 Things Every Leader Must Know</strong></u> curriculum was developed by educators and entrepreneurs to provide a holistic approach to effective leadership. It is a contemporary self-empowerment book for today's generation. It often draws comparisons to other notable empowerment classics such as: Think and Grow Rich; Chicken Soup for the Soul; and 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.<br />
<br />
I would like to thank each and every educator and conference attendee that purchased a book or bundled package from Hustle University during the conference! We look forward to visiting your school or school system in the near future to help re-connect Administration, Teachers, Students & Parents into a streamlined, well communicating & effective learning system.<br />

Brown (<a href="http://www.breg1994.com/">BREG</a>)<br />
<br />
<br />
On June 23, 2012 when my brother and his family were in town visiting, we went down to Underground Atlanta to get something to eat, checkout some vendors and hangout.<br />
<br />
As we were preparing to leave, we saw a large gathering of young people coming together and then we saw two female teenagers begin to argue with each other and then of course a fight broke out.<br />
<br />
Now, I understand that some fights are totally unavoidable, but the overwhelmingly majority of them are very avoidable, and we as adults have to teach our young people how to walk away from confrontations and live to see another day of life. When our young people fight in this day and time, they usually want to literally kill the other person because that's their mentality. So there's a high probability that someone may pull out a gun or a knife and end someone's life. As in the case of Bobby Tillman in Douglasville, GA, he got "stomped" to death by several male teenagers while over 70 people watched. What does that say about our mentalities and the value of life in general?<br />
<br />
I don't know about you, but I am going to really start focusing on teaching my children about loving themselves and loving, respecting and caring about other people because if they love themselves and feel good about themselves, there's a great chance that they won't be so eager to end the life of another person because they value their own lives.<br />
<br />
I have a speaking engagement coming up in August and I am going to highlight "Teen Violence" in my keynote address and challenge the young people and their parents alike to love themselves and to love others in spite of hard times and confrontations.<br />
<br />
We can collectively stop the violence in our homes, communities and schools if we actively communicate with each other better, be honest with each other and love each other on a daily basis!<br />
<br />
Yo, we can do it!!! Let's go ........!!! Brown - <a href="http://www.breg1994.com/">BREG</a> & <a href="http://e1c8b7x2ixfsbwe23r7culngfi.hop.clickbank.net/?tid=HUSTLEUNIVERSITY">HUSTLE UNIVERSITY</a><br />
<br />
<br />
I write this blog with a lot of thoughts running through my mind. First and foremost, I send my Prayers and Love out to <strong>TRAYVON MARTIN'S</strong> family and friends.<br />
<br />
We have lost another young man to <strong>Racism</strong>, <strong>Profiling</strong> and <strong>Hatred</strong>! You see, this type of behavior has been taking place for a very long time in this country and it is imperative that it stops immediately. It appears that the Sanford, FL police department was tremendously negligent and/or outright racist themselves when they allowed <strong>George Zimmerman</strong> to go free after fatally shooting Trayvon, claiming self-defense.<br />
<br />
Now, I understand that Florida has a "Stand Your Ground" law, but does it actually mean that a person can shoot down another person just because they look suspicious and a confrontation ensues? In this case, Zimmerman actually followed Trayvon after being told by police dispatch (911) not to pursue the suspicious individual. This "Stand Your Ground" law must be re-evaluated because if Zimmerman gets off without any charges being brought against him, a precedent of this nature could open the door for our young black men to be shot down in cold blood at any given time in any given place just because another person says they look suspicious. We all know if a young white male was shot in this same situation, there would be a totally different conversation being held right now. And that's REAL TALK!!!<br />
<br />
I would like to thank everyone who has put on a hoodie, signed petitions, written blogs, tweeted, sent out Facebook posts, etc. in support of Trayvon and justice actually taking place!<br />
<br />
To the parents of the hip-hop generation, we must continue to educate our youth and equip them with the knowledge to handle themselves properly in as many situations as possible. Our youth must be able to think quickly on their feet and make life & death decisions without feeling like they are being men. They must learn the importance of being able to "fight-another-day."<br />
<br />
President Obama has made comments regarding Trayvon, and has initiated a Federal Investigation. Thank you Mr. President! Several high ranking officers in the Sanford, FL Police Department have stepped down already, and I believe that they along with a lot of other people know that the "ish" is about to hit the fan and it is going to spread around to cover a lot of people and things that need to be cleaned up!<br />
<br />
Once America truly acknowledges that racism still exists in a major way, then we can start fixing (if possible) the relationships that we have between the many diverse races and cultures that exist in our country, but we must get started now!(BREG)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06757161714519522705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7541964175378894900.post-18949555099940169602012-01-14T11:22:00.000-05:002012-01-14T11:22:27.639-05:00HAPPY NEW YEAR from BAR-RED ENTERTAINMENT GROUP (BREG)!!!HAPPY NEW YEAR from BAR-RED ENTERTAINMENT GROUP (BREG)!!! 2011 was a great year and at the same time presented some challenges. We THANK all of the individuals, organizations and companies that did business with us in 2011, and we thank GOD for bringing us into 2012!<br />
<br />
BREG is excited about the opportunities that are coming forth in 2012, and we look forward to helping our current clients and new clients reach their goals and objectives.<br />
<br />
In 2012, look for awesome things from Nu Strata Music Group, Chipped Up Entertainment, X-tratainment Inc. & Hustle University! Artists that are bringing new music, live performances and videos in 2012 include Spade Kosta, Da Bad Habbitz, Grizz, Blushe, Chief Scrill, Lady X, Magnem P.I. & Jay L. Also look for new e-books for your Kindle (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050DERJC">click on this Amazon.com link</a>) directly from BREG.<br />
<br />
We must address our youth of today that are still killing each other at an alarming rate. BREG is looking forward to the day when the tv is turned on and there are no reports of a young person killing another young person. Parents and adults, it is on us to love, teach & discipline our children so that they will love themselves first & foremost and learn to respect & love others. That way they won't believe it is ok to just end another person's life. What actually happens is that two (2) lives are destroyed. The person that has been murdered and the person that goes to jail. Think about it, it's a lose-lose situation. Young people have a responsiblity too! Do not take education for granted because it is your best option for bettering whatever situation you are currently in, and education will bring about positive opportunities for you. You have the ability to understand what is wrong and what is right. Think before you talk, and definitely think before you act; and you will save yourself and your family a lot of heartache and unwanted problems. Believe in yourself, you can do it and have a successful life! <br />
<br />
On the political scene, there will be Local, State and National Elections taking place this year with the Presidential Election being the highlighted election. Do your research on the candidates and make the best decision that you can make for you and your family.<br />
<br />
So as you have read, BREG is very excited about 2012 and we look forward to connecting with exciting people, organizations and companies this year and beyond! One Love!!!<br />
<br />
<br />
Yours Truly,<br />

Thoughts By: B. Brown of <a href="http://www.breg1994.com/">Bar-Red Entertainment Group (BREG)</a><br />
<br />
<br />
As parents, we have egos that can be larger than any pro athlete or entertainer in the world when it comes to dealing with our children. The mantra is usually "Do what I say because I'm your father or mother!" Have you heard that before from someone you know very well?<br />
<br />
The truth of the matter is that we as parents and adults make mistakes, and we have to learn how to cope with those mistakes so that we become better because we made the mistake. I do not believe it is healthy for us to dog ourselves out totally and then be no good to anybody.<br />
<br />
My suggestion is that we acknowledge the mistake, analyze and determine what we could have done better and then move forward to a solution that helps all parties involved. This way, we are setting a great example for our children, and keeping everything moving forward.<br />

all we are human and as such we are not perfect. We are actually expected to
make mistakes because that is what leads us to look at what we don’t like in
ourselves as parents and what corrections we want to make. Unfortunately most
of us are conditioned by our own parents and by society that mistakes are bad
and the only way to pay for the sin of making them is to feel bad, incapable
and guilty. In fact we often feel the more severely we judge ourselves the more
we show how regretful we are of what we have done.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

falling into the trap of judgments leads to no good end. The only effect it has
on us is that it throws us into negativity and brings our emotional tone down.
On the other hand, allowing the impact of a mistake to lead us to a desire to
correct it allows us to improve our situation. In the mode of correction, we
tend to focus on the desire to improve, which helps us release our guilt and
put our energy into the betterment of the situation at hand.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Brown - <a href="http://www.breg1994.com/">Bar-Red Entertainment Group (BREG)</a><br />
<br />
<br />
I waited to write this blog because I wanted to cool-off and write an objective piece instead of just blasting "ASTRO" of the live tv reality performance show "X-Factor." He was almost sent home last week simply because of his attitude. L.A. Reid (Legendary Music Business Executive) and Simon Cowell (One of the Top Talent Scouts In the World) both made comments in regards to his attitude after Astro ended up in the bottom two (2) of the voting.<br />
<br />
You see, I have a problem with young people that are disrespectful and appear to be unthankful for the opportunities or help that they receive. It is truly a situation that has to be addressed with our young people.<br />
<br />
Until last week, Astro had not really experienced any adversity on the show because he has really been performing well! But as in life, just because you are talented and your performances have been going well, and everyone is telling you how great you are; things can change in a hurry. When there is public opinion voting taking place, there is always a chance that the most talented person does not win because other contestants may have better voting support teams and that will make all the difference in the world at the end of the day. Astro and a lot of our young people most overstand that life isn't going to always go their way, even if they are the most gifted and talented person.<br />
<br />
I have seen it 100 times. A young person doesn't receive the response or news that they want or expect, so they now believe the world is against them and they are mad! So now they want to act tough and say "F" the world because they don't care. This is the worse way for young people to conduct themselves because now no one wants to work with them or help them any more. Their mentors, coaches and teachers start looking at them differently and that's a major problem!<br />
<br />
As you saw with Astro, most of these young people are going to eventually breakdown (start crying) because they are actually hurt. They are embarrased and they feel terrible about what has just happened to them, and all they know how to do is to act like they do not care. That's a dangerous reaction to a situation that is going to continue to happen to each of us for the rest of our lives. The reality is that we are never going to get 100% of what we want all the time. That's the truth! We as parents and adults must teach our children about adversity and teach them how to act when adversity comes, because it is definitely coming! We cannot afford to allow our young people to believe that everything is going to go their way everytime. If we do that, we are setting them up for tremendous collaspes that they may or may not recover from in the future.<br />
<br />
I Pray that Astro bounces back this week with a humble, thankful and positive attitude!<br />
